Supported formats (including the ones that are not)
Formats TutuCut supports: opens MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC and HLS; video codecs H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1, VP8 and ProRes. AVI opens but goes through slower software transcoding. WMV, FLV, RM and DRM-protected files cannot be opened.
The table below reflects what the code actually does, not what sounds good. Unsupported formats are listed too — better to say so now than after you have selected a file.
Common formats (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM) use the hardware decoder in your device and are fast. Older formats can only be handled in software, which is much slower, so they are called out separately.
FAQ
Do iPhone videos (HEVC / MOV) work?
Yes. Both the MOV container and H.265 (HEVC) are supported. To share with Android phones or platforms that reject HEVC, use "iPhone video to MP4" to convert to H.264.
Can it handle 4K or even 8K?
Export goes up to 4K (2160p). 4K is memory hungry, so phones and older computers may report that a long file does not fit — export at 1080p instead, or sign in and use 4K cloud rendering.
Why will some MP4 files not open?
MP4 is only a container; what matters is the codec inside. An unsupported codec (very old MPEG-4 Part 2, or DRM encryption) will fail. The other common cause is a corrupt or partially downloaded file.
Are mobile browsers the same?
Mostly, though Safari on iOS is pickier about some codecs (High Profile H.265, for instance). When decoding fails we automatically try remuxing, then transcoding, then the system player — which covers most cases.
