Fading between shots is on by default here, because hard cuts in a photo slideshow read like something went wrong.
The first photo does not fade up from black and the last does not fade down into it — a slideshow that starts and ends on black looks like a fault, not a flourish.

How long does each photo stay?
1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds, and the total length is shown before you start.
Can I turn the fade off?
Yes, it is a checkbox. With it off you get hard cuts.
Can I add music?
Make the slideshow first, then use the "add music" tool — it swaps the audio without touching the picture.
Why are there black bars on some photos?
Because they are a different shape from the rest. Fitting keeps the whole photo; cropping would cut into it.
Does it handle photos from a phone?
Yes, including HEIC on devices that can read it.
