Resolution is how many pixels the picture has. A 4K frame is four times the size of a 1080p one, and the file is roughly four times bigger — often more than you actually need.
Five steps are available: 480p, 720p, 1080p, 2K and 4K. On a phone 720p already looks sharp; 1080p is plenty for social platforms; 4K matters mainly for big screens or footage you will crop later.

FAQ
Will lowering resolution make it blurry?
Not on a small screen. 1080p down to 720p is nearly indistinguishable on a phone; on a TV or large monitor the difference becomes visible.
Can I upscale 720p to 1080p?
Technically it can be enlarged, but it will not look sharper — enlarging only stretches existing pixels, it cannot invent detail. This site does not do super-resolution.
How is this different from compressing?
Changing resolution removes pixels; compressing reduces the data per frame while keeping the pixel count. Both shrink the file and they work best together.
Will a vertical video stay vertical?
Yes. This only changes size, not shape. To turn landscape into portrait, use the "landscape to portrait" tool.
Does the audio survive?
Yes, untouched.
